Sorry, I feel like there's something I'm missing. What do you mean with
"change sometimes in the state"? What are the VMs doing when that
happens?

Is it, for instance, that they're being shutdown, and as a consequence
of that, instead of disappearing, they stay there as (null)?

Or does it happen just out of the blue, while they're running?

What do their log files in /var/log/xen/ say?
