FWIW from upstream commit 10578a257d94 it appears to be possible to do this from the QEMU command line with "-trace enable=<pattern>", and with c84ea00dc29b a simpler "-d trace:<pattern>" form is added. So at least now users can enable this via device_model_args rather than faffing around writing files.
