Wow! What a day this Friday has been! Already most placement games are done.
U17 women
Before Austria surprisingly defeated Great Britain in the semi 11:9. In the initial pool Great Britain had beaten Austria 10:4. The other semi between Germany and France ended 15:1.
In the third place game Great Britain played France, who had lost all previous matches by a real margin. But then the French really toot Britain by surprise, and were well on the road to win the bronze medal, when Britain came back an eventually won in universe point 10:9. Congratulations to both team for a great fight!
In the final the German girls played the better game again and won 15:4, taking their second gold medal in this division after 2010 in Heilbronn.
U17 open: The classical final Great Britain vs. Germany
Israel beat Belgium and France beat Ireland, both 15:05, so the pressure was on Austria to beat Germany as a last chance for the semi, after the epic 15:14 time cap loss against GB on Thursday. So Austria came out strong from the beginning, and fought fiercely again.
And they were rewarded, time was capped again at 13, game to 15. This seemed like a bad omen, but they learned their lesson and beat Germany 15:13.
So Israel was unfortunate to drop out of the semis in a 3 way tie. Germany and Austria then met immediately again for the semi. And again Austria showed all their power, taking the lead 4:2. Then, Germany had its best phase, scoring 6 points when Austria only got 1, to take the lead 8:5, and then teams traded points to the end. Both squads can be really proud f their exquisite performance!
The same is true for France and Great Britain in the other semi. France was the clear underdog, after Great Britain's 7 straight victories. But in a semi, that does not count, so France began with full force and took a very good lead on GB. But GB had learnt how to fight back against Austria, and used it. 14:11 was the final result, so tomorrow France and Austria meet for Bronze, Great Britain and Germany go for gold.
Junior Women Final: Italy vs. Germany
Israel took on Slovakia for 11th, and could repeat their pool victory. The same goes for Latvia, who confirmed their win over Russia for 9th. As in their very first match, France and Austria met for bronze. Tied until 5:5, Austria took half time at 9:5. France fought back hard to 10:10, but ultimately Austria‘s offence proved to be more solid; 14:12 was the final score. 5th place goes to Finland, with the Czech women already with the disc at the score line: 17:16, high score match.
Junior Open Final: France vs. Germany
The quarters saw two 15:14, Sweden over Austria and France over Czech rep. So he Czechs did not get a rematch against GB after their earlier 14:15 loss, but instead beat Switzerland 14:12 and now face Austria, who won 13:12 over Israel in a real nailbiter in which Israel was up but once again had trouble pulling through their physically strenuous style all the way to victory.
Germany goes clear through to the final, sending Sweden on the quest for bronze. The real killer, however, was the other semi: Great Britain went strong, but France went stronger to secure their first final after 2009, winning 16:14.
Netherlands has won the Guts tournament!
Thursday evening there has been a Guts contest at the ASV stadium. All in all eight teams participated in a knock-out round consisting of quarters, semis and a final. Among the teams were „Bu-Ka-Ke!“ from Belgium, „The Ladz“ U17Ireland, „Ireland meets Sweden“, „Kolbas mit Mustard“ and „Flower Power“ both from Slovakia. Also a local team from the ASV named „Volle Tiere“ took part. In the final the „Smoking Gayloards“ from the Netherlands won over the hard fighting „Dinamo Riga“ from Latvia.
Medal day: Saturday
In U20 open 3rd place game, Sweden met Great Britain, who clearly were frustrated by losing the semi on Friday and basically was not there. Relatively easy job for the Swedes, congratulations for bronze!
U17
Austria met France and took Bronze 12:9. In the final we saw the rematch of the opeining gamen, which Great Britain had won over Germany. And they went into the lead early again, but Germany equalized at 2:2. After the amazing play both teams had shown in many matches, they acte a little more nervous, an we saw some unforced errors and even one or two drops, something that had not happened before. So This is especially true for Grmany, so Great Britain took the half time 8:4. Half way into the second half Germany did have come back. But by this time the Great Britain team had also really pulled their offense skills back together and won gold. Congatulations to GB for their first title since Vienna 2009! And a great compliment to both teams for their ultimate.
U20 women
The Final was the rematch of the last EYUC women final, Wroclaw 2011, with champion Italy facing the hosts, Germany, determined to make up for that. Both go undefeated, but Germany was actually cruising through their matches. And they came out strong and took the lad, but Italy also was able to score on offense. Germany did not turn over much, and took half at 9:3. The german team was working well as in the entre event, without any star r any weak spot on the team certainly the most homogenous squad and almost free of turnovers in the final.
In the second half Italy really fought hard to come back, and did manage to break, but Germany safely took gold at 17:9.
What a delight for them, after they felt that they lost gold rather than won silver in 2011. And Italy proves a solid team, being in the European top 2 for 3 straight years.
