This is intended. SDL (the graphical rendering library) doesn't work perfectly in fullscreen mode under OSX: the game becomes very slow and there are important graphical glitches making the game almost unplayable. The only practical way to fix that is to wait for an hypothetical version of SDL that fixes this.
