Actually it is possible to link pictures in MediaWiki. See
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Alison/Imagelink .

An example can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Alison/Bar .

I think we can steal the code. It is widely in use, and is GFDL'd.
