I've never *not* known what graupel meant, but that's because I grew up in western Pennsylvania and had a German uncle.
It's snow in pellet form instead of big fluffy flakes. It looks like small hailstones, but since it's snow and not ice, it's soft. Don't feel bad about not knowing it.
