I didn't actually watch Christiane's debut. I did, however, see the first
fifteen seconds of it just now, courtesy of WNN's Facebook-posted News Vault
piece. Here's how she opened the program.

"Good morning. I am thrilled to be here in the Newseum. After 20 years
covering the world, the story in this country is turning into one of the
most fascinating: the struggle over politics and policy, and how they merge
to meet people's needs."

(1) The third sentence is grammatically unsound. When she says, "After 20
years covering the world," she's obviously referring to herself. Yet this
phrase is left to modify the noun "story," implying that a story has spent
20 years covering the world. Terrible.

(2) The third sentence is also preposterous. The concept of U.S. politics
and policy has suddenly *turned into* one of the most fascinating stories?

Not trying to be mean. I think Amanpour is great at what she does, and I
would have loved to see a world politics/policy program coupled with a
domestic one on Sunday mornings. But I do think that it's not to much to
ask of ABC (or any of the networks) to devote one hour a week to the inner
workings of Washington, and either this show is going to stray from that
focus... or the host is going to be someone who has not spent the past 20
years building up the kind of detailed knowledge that Tim Russert (or, for
that matter, David Gregory -- or Jake Tapper!) had.
