Thanks for everyones suggestions. When I looked at the certificate I got the error "This certificate does not appear to be valid for the selected purpose." on both 3.6 and 3.7 but for some reason 3.6 had installed ok (I haven't tried removing and reinstalling 3.6 as I didn't want to loose WiX altogether. On further investigation I found that the root certificates were updated in Dec 2012 (KB931125) and this PC was missing the update - it is a corporate PC and Windows Updates are controlled centrally.
Installing KB931125 fixed the issue and I can now install WiX 3.7. Neil >What service pack is on this XP machine? Is this only an issue with wix, >or do all 3.7 bundles fail?
