It's hard to articulate in a short email. Basically what I'm trying to say is when you have thousands of files that get organized into hundreds of assets and used to compose dozens of products that you have to be very methodical in the way that you factor your dependency relationships. Automatic scanning just doesn't scale to this level. It might work well enough for a small shop shipping one off stand alone installers but even that's questionable. I've seen some of the choices that VDPROJ and InstallShield make regarding dependency scanning and it's not pretty. RE: see some of my blog posts talking about IS packaging .NET framework assemblies that are in the GAC as part of the NETFX runtime and doing COM Extract with bad filtering that whacks up your TCPIP stack when you do an uninstall. To me, a properly behaving deterministic installer starts with statically authoring/coding your source, checking it into source control and running a build. I don't expect the "magic" to happen during the build without any effort from me. But that's just me and my 16 years of experience writing installers talking... :-)
