I don't know if there is any official reference covering what properties the VS bootstrapper already "knows", but the MSFT-supplied packages I have on my system seem to all use the ProcessorArchitecture property to determine platform. In the examples I've looked at it seems to have one of the following three values: "Intel" [for x86], "amd64" [for x64], and "IA64" [for ia64].
