You're probably talking about the document which describes the
installation process, also known as the installation guide. It usually
contains the description of the installation procedure, step by step.
Start from the Welcome screen and proceed explaining what each screen is
for. The best practice is making the installation self-explanatory, that
is, you don't need a document to install software. But the complex
installs might need this extra clarification.

Sometimes customers want to know what actions the installation program
does towards the target system. This part should be documented in great
detail, emphasizing the install doesn't touch the critical areas, or, if
it does, why it is necessary.

IMHO, a good sign is when you're never addressed with a question "How to
install" after you gave a link to this document.
