Hi David,

Yes, it's possible, but probably not quite as you've described it. What
you're looking to do is an upgrade to the application. You can release
this as a full MSI that performs new installs straight to the new
version and will also update any old installs, and efficiently handles
which files are copied etc. However, doing so will require you to do
quite a bit more reading to fully get to grips with the underlying MSI
technology to support this.

If you haven't already, download and install the MSI 4.5 SDK, and in the
MSI.CHM file search for Upgrade and read everything you can find, which
will include an example of upgrading a package. Depending on what you're
changing in your package you may also want to look into the Component
rules, including entries like Changing the Component Code. You'll
probably want to do a Major Upgrade, and make sure you take advantage of
what's described in Preventing an Old Package from Installing Over a
Newer Version. Also, be careful with the sequencing of your uninstall of
the old version, see the help file entry for the RemoveExistingProducts
Action for more details.

Cheers,
James

Subject: Re: [WiX-users] Domain Install

As an update, the suggestion about the type 35 CA that James gave me
worked great and everything was good for deployment, but during the
final acceptance testing, I had a new requirement placed on me which set
me back a few steps and I need some additional advice.

Is it possible (and if so, how) to have a package determine if a
previous version is installed, and if not, install all the components
(say #'s 1 through 20), but if it is, then update a select subset of
components (say #'s 8, 10, and 17) with the new component version? In
essence, they want me to do is combine a minor patch and a full install
into a single package with the intelligence to know which action to take
based on the state of the machine it is run on.
