Help2 content is generated from the code plus added content (like
namespace documentation) and creates many files which would be a real
pain to manually have to update hundreds if not thousands of files since
it could change on the next compilation due to the addition of another
link or change in the code. The point here is this is generated content
not hand developed and due to links must really be treated as a whole
not as individual parts. You are right on the overhead my bad, the size
of the msi after looking at the content was due to what was being added
not the number of files.
In terms of the names, I don't have control since I am using heat to
generate the contents on the fly (though keeping the Package's Id
consistent). Once again it would be a waste of time to try and change
the name of every generated file since a refactoring of the code could
change everything.
My point here is I think it is a misnomer to think that you should hand
manage every bit of content that goes into an msi especially for things
that get generated every time.

Can you clarify what you mean? Having one file per component adds just a
tiny bit of overhead for the associated table rows.
(plus the LGHT1076 warnings due to length of names)
You have control over the names -- just make 'em shorter. Or am I
missing something?
My thought is to just zip the help content into a single file
and then use a custom action to unzip the content in the directory once
extracted.
What is the communities thoughts on this?
How do you service them?
