In both cases the msi file was on the desktop of the Vista machine (a VMWare virtual machine, if that makes any difference). The only difference between the two tests was the digital signature on the MSI file.
Jeff Where are you running the file from? When I was playing with Vista I discovered that the correct name (for my exe, not an msi, btw) was shown if I ran it from the desktop, but I got what looked like a temporary file name if I ran it from off our server. I can only guess that when I run it from the server, Vista makes a temporary copy and then runs that. This would make sense from an implementation point of view, but it does mean the UAC prompt isn't correct.
