Perhaps some would find useful WixEdit
(http://wixedit.sourceforge.net/); it appears to be in more active
development than WixTrim, and has a dialog editor and rather good
overall interface. It supports editing, though not creating, Fragments.

The tool definitely has a long way to go before it becomes a great GUI
for
WiX. Some notion of factoring your authoring into fragments is an
absolute
must, among the other features that aren't implemented yet. However, it

does look promising and has nice eye candy.

The thing that I thought was most interesting was that he posted it at
GotDotNet with the source code, so that might imply that he's willing to

share it with the community and let it grow. On the other hand, the
core
tool set could probably use more contribution without diluting the pool
of
available and interested talent any further, but who am I to talk (as a
non-contributor so far to either)?

For me from an authoring perspective, the most useful single thing has
been
adding the WiX schema file to VS.NET and then setting up VS to use the
XML
editor for WiX files. Having type-ahead and auto-completion of the XML
goes
a LONG way to making the angle brackets bearable. That, combined with a
VS
macro to generate a new GUID mapped to a key stroke, and I'm pretty
good.

However, doing UI is another story. I think we could all agree that
hand
authoring UI without a designer in raw angle brackets, even with some
type-ahead support, sucks. This tool looked really promising in that
regard.

Yeah, I looked at it over a year ago (kinda' chagrined that the thing
used
ClickOnce to deploy, heh). Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it has
been
developed since then. The editor still doesn't support adding
Components or
Files. I'm not sure about the GUI editor (which is where it started)...
maybe it's useful enough.
