Looks like I saved up all the legal questions for the same day. Again, I'm not a lawyer so if you want real answers to these questions you need to talk to your lawyer. I'm just passing on what I've heard about the topic.
1. As far as I know, if you make a change to any of the files in the WiX toolset (all of them should have the CPL at the top of them, please let me know if I missed any) then your changes should be published. 2. Your changes do *not* have to be accepted back into the WiX toolset to be published. Thus you do not have to sign the assignment agreement. 3. If you have bug fixes, then I would encourage you to get the assignment agreement sent in so that we can get your bug fixes distributed to everyone with the next WiX toolset release. WiX v2 has a high bar, but if you've found something really bad, we'll definitely take it and if the bug hasn't been fixed in WiX v3 we should look at getting it done there. ________________________________________ From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Dana Gutride Sent: Friday, July 07, 2006 10:55 AM To: WiX-users Subject: [WiX-users] Submitting enhancements/bug fixes I was reading a thread today that was discussing this very question. I too, would be more than willing to submit enhancements/bug fixes. One question I had, though, was what if I adjust the code in such a way that it wouldn't really be helpful to other users. Maybe I've limited some functionality or locked down a piece so it was specific to my install by basing a condition upon a certain property I've included in my MSI or something similar. Does the Common Public License restrict me from releasing the dll as part of my MSI without submitting the changes back to the community? Is it necessary to meet the terms of the license if I sign the agreement and then submit my changes? I've read Rob's posts about how to become part of the WiX dev community and one thing that stood out to me was that any changes to v2 will probably not be accepted unless they are major show stoppers. My changes are definitely not huge bug fixes, just minor tweaks for convenience. The company I work for wants to make sure we are in the clear as far as this open source license goes before we release our product in August. I'd be happy to hear what everybody thinks.
