Albert - this is great feedback. Here's some tips that might help you with using WiX more easily.
Although I'm still not recommending WiX 3.0 in production environments, you can use the WiX 3.0 version of WixCop and it should quickly update your authoring to the latest 3.0 schema (if not - it's a bug). That would be a quick and easy way to test out WiX 3.0 from time to time and hopefully when it's ready for production use you can quickly convert all your authoring to the new schema easily. Tallow has options to convert .rc files to wix authoring (but Heat does not yet have the capability). You might try running this on the rc files the first time, then maintaining them in the wix authoring afterwards. I did start with Wix-3 but realizing I need to deploy in 2006 I switched to Wix-2, although I like to test for Wix-2 and Wix-3. But after several builds of Wix-3 (I get the latest release whenever available) It was no longer possible to compile my wxs sources without significant changes for both Wix-2 and Wix-3. When someone has a tool, XSLT or something else I would like to test my installers vor both Wix-2 and Wix-3 but since I am building inside a production environment I don't have the time to maintain 2 versions of my wxs sources. As for Votive; I've tried and tried but deceided that it was too much work to do anything in Votive due to (persistent?) bugs. And as mentioned above, I don't have the time to expiriment on what is wrong (I did take a peek and saw several points for which I, or my collegue, has some fixes) I think Votive is nice to start a simple project, but due to the lack of a resource editor (among others) I consider it rather useless (sorry for that). It would be nice if it had the possibility to use the default resource editor of VS and a conversion function to convert RC data to Wix UI format. What great is in Votive is the tight integration with SS and solution/project support, although it might be even nicer if you can add yout CA DLL-projects to the same solution as where your Votive project is. (Maybe this is already possible, I havent had time to look at this myself) I hope this helps... Albert van Peppen PS. I'd like to take this comment as a starting point to have a discussion about the versions of WiX. About 10 days ago, I sent out an e-mail asking people about experiences with the latest weekly builds to decide if they can be pushed to SourceForge. Only a single person replied. I take this that many, many people are very happy with the version of WiX 2.0 they have installed and that makes me conclude that WiX 2.0 is pretty stable. The fact that some pretty big software ships with setups made with WiX only confirms that. Exceptions are the "add-ons": the CA's have their know limitations and Votive and WixUI do pop up with enhancements on a regular basis). [It would be interesting to find out which builds of v2.0 people are using - maybe we should do a poll one day :)] And, work on Wix 3.0 seems to have advanced quite a bit and can show off with some compelling and working features. Quite often, the response is "this works better in v3.0, we won't be porting back the change, though". I get the impression that Wix 3.0 is really worth trying out - at an early "beta" stage, let's say. That, thus, leads me to believe that v2.0 is finished and rather stable. So, maybe it is about time to come out with that and start thinking about talking in terms of "release candidates" or "final" versions? All this would result in v2.0's stability being confirmed and the vast improvements in v3.0 being acknowledged, so that the adventurous people can star playing with v3.0 (so that it gets more attention, and that the major bugs can be fleshed out)... Of course, that's just my opinion, but I would love to hear feedback on this.
