In the WSDG at https://www.wireshark.org/docs/wsdg_html/ in the section 9.2.1. Setting up the dissector under Dissection. There is the sentence Note that the U following tree and data signals to the compiler that the parameters are unused The code fragment above that paragraph has the _U_ attributes applied to the parameters, but in the explanatory text the pairs of underscores have invoked a markdown-style italicisation.
