Quoting Ed Beroset

The *proper* (for certain values of that word) way to decide this issue is
really to do a usability study, however that is expensive/time-consuming so
unless Riverbed wants to make that investment it isn't likely to happen

They found the same confusion about the Record icon and noted that
the Play icon had 85% recognition, but Record only 42% and noted
that the Record icon was "Often though of as 'stop', particularly if
coloured red. Connotations of traffic lights, 'no entry' sign or
full stop."
without the intention to add confusion to the discussion, I like to
suggest this:
1.) use a classical green/blue 'start' (play) button as that's
probably the 'commonly accepted' symbol to start an action, in this
case the capture action, regardless of a possible confusion with a
planned playback feature, which does not sound like a key feature of
Wireshark and thus should not get it's own button in the main GUI.
2.) Use a totally different icon to indicate the CAPTURE/RECORD
action, like: a camera
3.) Use a funny icon, like a 'wire shark' with wide open jaws, eating
up the packets ;-)
