You see the crash even with "thousands of colors"?  As I remember, the X server code path in question was followed only with 24-bit color, so maybe there's *another* bug. I changed to Thousands (16bit) color in the monitor preferences, not the X11.app As Micahel hinted, I installed X11-2.1.1.pkg from http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/xquartz  and my problem magically went away. Not even recompiling anything was needed. Just install and a reboot. One warning popped up while listening to my ethernet. 21:11:21          Warn Dissector bug, protocol LDAP, in packet 823: packet-ber.c :1216: failed assertion "DISSECTOR_ASSERT_NOT_REACHED" the corresponding packet 823 is attached for the LDAP dissector guru's to look at.
