I live in the Mission district in San Francisco.
I had an idea to set up a bridge and an antenna on my roof to connect to some of the free and open networks in my neighborhood. Perhaps I'd mount it on a pole on one of those tv rotators so that I could turn the antenna a bit. Sort of like a "warhousesitting" version of wardriving.

The available networks are anywhere's from .3 - .8 miles (1500 - 4000 ft).
I've read about the different antenna types, but I'm not really sure which is the best compromise.

It seems that if I use a parabolic I could pull in almost anything, but then it would have such a narrow beam I'd have to rotate the antenna quite a bit to connect to different AP's.
But if I use panel or something with a wider beam, I might get more interference.

Any ideas? Parabolic, patch, panel, yagi? something else?

Thanks,
Kent
