This is not a practical question (ie, help me solve the problem), but more a hypothetical / theoretical one. Just trying to understand what causes a large delta in the received signal strength.

If you're having problems with a 100' link, you probably have other problems, like too many obstructions in the way. You could also try a better directional antennna, or to switch polarities at both ends.
