3Com AP 6000 supports short preamble. Not sure what the setting is by default. To turn it off, you'll have to surf to the AP's management IP address and do the following:
In the Configuration Management System navigation tree under System Configuration, click Data Transmission Properties. The Data Transmission Properties page appears, where you can select radio channel settings and performance settings.
You want to change the "Data Preamble" to "Long". Apply the settings, and you should be good to go.

Now to try to convince the librarian/IT person. Is there any down-side to changing from short to long preamble? What is the purpose of one or the other?
