That is all as expected for 11n.


improved: it now shows 90+ Mbps instead of the 10 I saw before.

So probably, I don't have the problem I've originally reported.

Still, ac doesn't seem to be on, tho.

The tunable doesn't get unset by anything if set correctly at boot time.
Maybe double check there is no typo or copy&paste problem? You can use the
name from the sysctl to be sure.
