Greetings Brian, I'm guessing that virtually everyone who reads this list has written software that decodes packets. If you want to learn more about the innards of packets, I recommend you get and use a piece of software called "Ethereal", available from www.ethereal.com .
There's also an excellent book on the topic, "Internetworking with TCP-IP" (fourth edition) by Douglas Comer, ISBN# 81-203-2065-4. As for source code, I can't help you as my employer owns everything I write. I suspect many list participants are in the same position. So the best I can do is to suggest that you keep on creating your own packet-decoding source code, using the resources I've suggested.
