I've got a Win2K Pro system running with WinPcap 3.1Beta installed. In general WinPcap works fine.
On this system I've also installed Microsoft Virtual PC 2004, available for trial at: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/virtualpc/ I've installed several different Operating systems in different Virtual PCs on this system. In general these work fine. However, I've discovered 2 odd things: 1 - The Virtual NIC provided by Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 won't do promiscuous mode receives for the Guest Operating systems (i.e. if you're running WinXP in a Guest OS and you install WinPcap there, Ethereal, WinDump, etc can only see traffic coming to and/or from the MAC address of the Virtual NIC (Plus MultiCast/Broadcast)). I'll claim that this is a Bug in Microsoft Virtual PC 2004's NIC virtualization. 2 - Using Ethereal (or WinDump) on the Host Win2k environment works well when a Virtual PC is running with one exception: All packets being sent FROM the Virtual PC's NIC can be captured. However No packets addressed TO the Virtual PC's NIC are captured EVEN when capturing is being done in promiscuous mode. These packets are clearly being received by the host machine's NIC (since they get delivered to the simulated machine), so I'd expect to be able to receive them in the capture stream. Would someone call this a Bug in WinPcap or merely a secondary "feature" of the above Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 Bug? Thoughts? - Mark Pizzolato ================================================================= This is the WinPcap users list.
