After the --, the first argument is the script name; everything else
is passed to the script. This is the same as you're used to passing
to mwscript.
Is that a limitation of Python's command line parsing?
I mean, the obvious way to do it from the viewpoint of usability is to
take options after the first argument as belonging to the script.
