I am writing to share a recent preliminary research<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IIITH-OKI/She_Leads/Lab/Women_with_Extended_Rights/Preliminary_Research> conducted by the Open Knowledge Initiatives (OKI)<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IIITH-OKI>, with support from allies in the Wikimedia movement. The initial findings indicate a gap in the availability and distribution of extended rights across Indic-language Wikipedia communities. Extended rights can provide an important indication of a community’s capacity for content maintenance, patrolling, administration, and participation in community governance. Looking at these rights can therefore help us better understand how communities are developing beyond content creation and where there may be gaps in participation and community capacity. The data for this research has been collected manually from the relevant Wikipedia statistics pages. At this stage, the findings are very basic, and we are open to any feedback, corrections, or suggestions if you notice anything missing or if there are other aspects that should be considered. While the data helps us identify possible gaps, numbers alone cannot explain why these gaps exist or how they are experienced by community members. Community perspectives are therefore an essential part of understanding the findings. We would particularly like to understand whether the gaps identified in the data are also visible from the community’s perspective, what kinds of barriers contributors experience, how familiar they are with extended rights, and what kind of support may help people participate in advanced community roles. In order to gather these perspectives, we are opening a survey. Your response will help us validate and better understand the findings and, more importantly, help inform the next steps of this work.
