Dear friends, The Wikimedia movement is showing up in full force next week (September 20 - 27) at the United Nations in New York City for the Summit of the Future <https://www.un.org/en/summit-of-the-future>.
The Summit of the Future is expected to result in a negotiated Global Digital Compact, meaning it represents the final phase of our movement-wide campaign to impact the text of the Global Digital Compact <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Global_Digital_Compact_Wikimedia_Advocacy_Collaboration_2024>. Wikimedia affiliates and the Foundation will be active on the ground throughout the week, including hosting an important event that you are invited to attend. The Global Digital Compact: a refresher You may recall that, back in April, we wrote to you about the Global Digital Compact. The Compact will serve as a blueprint to help UN member states shape their internet policy and regulation at a country level. Since then, dozens of Wikimedia affiliates, together with the Foundation, have scaled up a campaign to impact the text of the Compact, including circulating an open letter, which gathered nearly 700 signatures from individuals and Wikimedia affiliates <https://wikimediafoundation.org/news/2024/04/23/open-letter-protect-wikipedia-global-digital-compact/>. Our objective has been to encourage UN member states and civil society to work together to create an internet which upholds human rights, and protects community-led spaces online. We will continue to work toward this objective next week in the final phase of drafting. You’re invited: the Wikimedia event at the UN Summit of the Future Action Days Join us on September 21, 15:15 - 16:30 UTC (11:15 - 12:30 EST) for our event “The Power of the Commons: Digital Public Goods for a More Secure, Inclusive, and Resilient World” <https://wikimediafoundation.org/advocacy/power-of-the-commons-unga-event/>. This event is a massive win for us and it came from real teamwork! It is co-sponsored by the UN Member State Delegations of Germany, Mexico, and Poland, and the UN Office of the Secretary-General's Envoy on Technology <https://www.un.org/techenvoy/>, as well as the organizations Access Now <https://www.accessnow.org/>, TUM Think Tank <https://tumthinktank.de/>, Network of Centers <https://networkofcenters.net/>, Wikimedia Deutschland <https://www.wikimedia.de/>, Wikimedia Czech Republic <https://www.wikimedia.cz/en/>, Wikimedia Polska <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Polska>, Wikimedia UK <https://wikimedia.org.uk/>, and Wikimedia Europe <https://wikimedia.brussels/>. You can access the recording via this link <http://webtv.un.org/en/asset/k11/k11syjqt72>. Additionally, Maryana Iskander will be featured during the plenary session of the Action Days, entitled “Laying the Foundations of a Digital Future for All.” This session will explore inclusive, safe, and sustainable innovation and technology, focusing on the Global Digital Compact’s principles and advancing AI for humanity’s benefit. While the plenary will not be available to stream, we will upload Maryana’s portion of the video to Commons after the event. What’s next? The final, negotiated Global Digital Compact will be released following the Summit for the Future. After the Global Digital Compact is made public, we will provide a recap of the process and an analysis of what the text could mean for the future of the Wikimedia projects. Thank you for your support. We hope to see you online on the 21st! All the best, Ziski on behalf of the Global Digital Compact campaign team Franziska Putz (she/her) Senior Movement Advocacy Manager Global Advocacy, Wikimedia Foundation [email protected] UTC Timezone
