Answering my own question:
use new AjaxFormComponentUpdatingBehavior("onchange")
for example:
suggestField.add(new
AjaxFormComponentUpdatingBehavior("onchange") {
protected void onUpdate(AjaxRequestTarget target) {
target.addComponent(aContainer);
return;
}
});
