Ed,
Instead of adding the new TreeNode to the TreeNode that the user clicked
on, you should insert the new TreeNode into your DefaultTreeModel object.
DefaultTreeMethod provides this method:
public void insertNodeInto(MutableTreeNode newChild,
MutableTreeNode parent,
int index)
