The issue turned out to be that the DHCP server needed rebooting. 
Inspecting the log showed the Pi wasn't able to reach the GW1000 over the 
network, despite both the Pi and GW1000 being almost next door to the WAP. 
Since the reboot (6th Jan from memory) it has run perfectly.
