kevin, please post the contents of /var/log/syslog from the period of time when you did the 'purge'. when dpkg fails on pre- or post-inst, it means that the installation package encountered a configuration that it was not expecting and that it was unable to resolve. i'd love to know what state your system is in so that we can make the dpkg configuration more robust, and only with that information can i tell you exactly what you should do to clean it up.
