My $0.02.

I read this as email using gnus, after sorting based on List-Id:, which
gives me threading and scoring and reading mail without a mouse. I
would find a move to anything forum-like appalling. I've long been
bothered by github pretending to have full project hosting and not
having mailinglists. If there was someting forum-like, I might pay
attention some, but I would probably stop trying to help people. I know
I'm not typical :-)

I am also not a fan of requiring people to sign up with github to
participate in discussions.

The mailing list is misconfgured and puts in
  Reply-To: weewx-user@googlegroups.com
so that the "reply" action in one's Mail User Agent, defined to reply
to the sender, composes a reply to the list. This is distressingly
common these days.

It might make sense to migrate the list to groups.io. Yes, you have to
sort of sign up with them, but they are smaller and that seems less
bothersome than github and certainly less bothersome than google,
although one can (and I do) subscribe to google groups without an
account.
