- The Vue is smaller and lighter and less expensive. The VP2 is bigger.
Like really really bigger.
- The consoles are different, but I think they're both hideously ugly
and 1978ish in appearance.
- The battery backup on the VP2 console is a nice feature if your power
bounces occasionally
- The VP2 permits you to add additional sensors (not many people need
this)
- The Vp2 lets you split the sensors so the anemometer is near the
recommended 10m height while the rain/temp sensors are at the recommended
lower 1.5m or so height I used to have my VP2 at about 9 feet elevation
and finally put up a flagpole that let me mount the anemometer at 20 ft or
so....made a massive difference in finally reading the wind and especially
the gusts.
Davis-related:
- Maintenance is nothing basically other than popping the rain collector
off and clearing out bugs/dirt/etc. a couple times a year. I haven't had
any problems with birds nesting/perching, but I think the new VP2 come with
bird spikes to attach to the rain collector to prevent that.
- Replacement parts are easy to find, from cards to sensors to consoles
etc.
My VP2 has been up since Jan-2009 and just plain works. I had to replace
the reed switch 18 month ago which was 5 minutes of soldering, Davis sent
me replacements for free. They also sent me a replacement sensor card
'after' the unit was out of warranty. Great service on the phone and via
email every time I've contacted them. I can't say anything bad about the
hardware or the people.
That said, their datalogger price is just a total scam for money in my
opinion, but I found a deal back then for under $100 and got the serial
logger. Works fine with a serial2usb converter.
I guess I'd say that if you can get the anemometer up very high to mount it
as close to properly as possible, see if you can do the VP2 for that
feature, if you can handle the price.
There are lots of places that sell Davis gear with ok prices. The Vue
looks like about $160 cheaper at places like Scaled Instruments (stations

and parts

available there).
