Correction: changing the permissions back to www-data ironed things out. However, I would like user ubuntu to have access to www-data folder.
How can I make it work? I have tried sudo adduser ubuntu www-data and confirmed that ubuntu belongs to the www-data group. But it still doesn't work. Thanks.
