Based on my experience I can say that Cherokee works with uWSGI and I believe it won't be a problem to make it work with lighttpd, although I do not have personal experience with nginx. Moreover, I also did manage to make uWSGI work with --http option. So, my well-wished suggestion is to start from the simple setup on your localhost (desktop/netbook/whatever) machine using Linux under VM (e.g. virtuablbox) if your desktop is non-Linux and make it work there. Then, knowing what's going on, you can proceed towards your Linode VPS.
