I'm just starting to read the web2py docs so I'm a complete noob ... however this may be the answer:
"Requests for files in the static folder are handled directly and large files are automatically streamed to the client." I found this in the web2py book page at this link<http://web2py.com/book/default/chapter/04> . Hope that helps.
