db(...).select(..., limitby=(0, 5)) See http://web2py.com/book/default/chapter/06#orderby,-groupby,-limitby,-distinct. The first value is the starting record, and the second is the number of records to select. You can use it in conjunction with orderby if you need to sort the records before pulling the top 5.
