I had another look around. Here are my notes ... YAML: Creative commons licence with backlink. Unacceptable, right.
Golden Grid: MIT licence seems good and the size is tiny. Would be great to include, but the project doesn't seem active enough, so I'm not so sure. Blueprintcss: MIT and well supported. Seems very comprehensive but maybe not quite simple enough... may be better as some kind of plugin as suggested previously. http://960.gs/: MIT and looks active. Size 8Kb so that seems light enough and straightforward to use too. YUI: Has everything incl kitchen sink. Only as plugin I guess. Conclusion: 960 grid might be a decent choice to replace existing layout table. Blueprint / YUI as plugins as Massimo suggested earlier.
