Comparing apples to apples is different. Mostly I am playing with EC2 and this is not a definitive decision.
It is true that normal shared hosting is much cheaper but I want access to the apache config file. So I compared pricing of EC2 with some VPS hosting and I found it similar. I need a single instance. As far as I understand Amazon will charge a fixed amount for the server (0.085/hour * 24hours/month * 30months) + somthing for EBS and something for traffic. I cannot really quantify those numbers so I ma hoping this experiment will help me understand. The current web2py.com is hosted on a virtual machine running on one core of a 8 cores power mac in my office. It is a university so we have very high speed networks. Everybody seems to complain that the amazon network is slow.
