Try M/DB (http://www.mgateway.com/mdb.html). It's an Open Source clone of SimpleDB and works "out of the box" with the boto Python library (just change the connect parameters as documented on the page above). The M/DB installer takes just a few minutes to get going on a Ubuntu machine or VM (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxC7Yvsmlfs)
As an experiment I've just input my iTunes library export listing of 10,200 tracks into it, running in a Linux VM on my laptop (which is also running an XP VM on a Vista host) and getting searches by artist or title consistently returning in about 0.3 seconds.
