I would like to strongly advocate that the project not be sidetracked and that focused remains on improving the web2py trunk. I'm pretty new here, but from what I've seen web2py has a great future if the focus is channeled correctly.
The issues with Google groups are real and significant. Perhaps resolving this problem will require a middle ground, my suggestion: we could look for a hosted service which offers some of the functionality that we've been discussing. Two possible options: 1. Coactivate.org - It offers an integrated forum/mailing list and data should be pretty safe. 2. Getsatisfaction.com - community driven user support, Either of these could solve the problem while adding little administrative overhead. Coactivate.org is free, getsatisfaction.com has an basic package which is free.
