Try using the class:

input.string {
    width: 450px;
}

or if you don't want to affect all input.string:

#mytable_myfield{
    width: 450px;
}

or go crazy...

db.define_table('mytable',Field('myfield','string'))
db.mytable.myfield.widget = lambda f,v: INPUT(_type="text", _value=v,
_class="crazy_input",_name="myfield",_id="mytable_myfield",
_size="100")
