Val, I empathize because I have been waiting for 3 months to include a test connect string for Firebird <https://github.com/web2py/pydal/issues/611>. Firebird simply won't work without this, but no one even adds a comment.
I imagine that there are not enough devs, and I understand it is difficult maintaining this code.
