Here's an example from my site:

Field("sender", "reference auth_user",
                  default=lambda: current.auth.user.id,
                  represent=db.auth_user._format,
                  requires=IS_NULL_OR(IS_IN_DB(db,'auth_user.id'))),

As you can see, it can be accessed as the attribute _format on any table.
