I've been playing around with Pony ORM lately (and SQLAlchemy) and am thinking of using Pony in place of the DAL. I know I'll give up a bunch of integration with the Grid and such but feel it may be better for me in the long run. I'm not a fan of using the DAL outside of web2py, it feels heavy compared to these other ORMs. The DAL has MANY great features but I'm seriously thinking of migrating away. (funny choice of words as migrations aren't supported by Pony)
