your attached report is only 1,8 kB reports can get large in case you include large images. currently the image data itself is not resized, so if you have a very large image the report could get very large as well. Further if you use additional fonts the fonts are embedded in the pdf.
about the variables question: variables are basically placeholders so you can design only one template with dynamic data.
