There's been a couple of discussions of self-hosting in the past, but the issues that would have for everybody else (at least short term) are a) choosing or developing the software to do the forums (and some forum software is pretty sucky for being able to follow threads and to retrieve old posts) b) accessing the archives -- this group has been going since 2008, and while the threads from before version 2.00 might not be very helpful these days, there's still a lot of value in searches.
