What is an easy way to increment a field in a db table?

The brute force way would be something like
rows = db.query(db.mytable.id > 0).select()
for row in rows:
  newcount = row.mytable.counter + 1
  db.mytable.update(db.mytable.id == row.mytable.id, counter = newcount)
pass

Is there something more elegant?
